Honduras Photos:
Our Newton neighbors, Barb and Bill Fash (head archaeologists on the Copan excavation for the past 23 years) who graciously showed us around. We got the royal tour, tunnels and all, with fascinating explanations that really brought the Mayan civilization to life. Copan, Honduras
Barb showing us her new open-air museum and replica of Rosalia, a carved and beautifully painted temple found under many layers of demolished temples of past rulers. They have recreated what the temples and buildings would have looked like in all their glory. Copan, Honduras
The family in one of the many tunnels done to excavate preexisting temples and tombs of Mayan rulers. Copan, Honduras
An original piece of faade of one of the first rulers. The latest decoration was carved stone but the earliest decoration was made by building up stucco relief and shaping it into a design. It was not very durable and they had always carved their stellae out of stone so they eventually applied the more durable technique to the buildings themselves. Copan, Honduras
A view of the plaza. The temples are not as high as Tikal, but Copan has all the beautiful stone carvings. There is also a ball court. (Alex was fascinated and writes a lot about it in his essay on Honduras). Copan, Honduras
Another break from travel and sightseeing for Alex to create another Construx modelá this time a phoneámaybe he wants to call his friends at home. Copan, Honduras
Patty and Katie relaxing and watching the sunset on a tiny island in the Caribbean called Cayos Cochinos (Hog Islands) in the Bay Islands. It had one place to stay, great snorkeling and home cooked food complete with chocolate chip cookies. Our hosts told us about how they survived in the generator room during Hurricane Mitch. Cayos Cochinos, Honduras
Katie had great fun collecting sea glass, which is thought to be 'mermaid tears'. We found coral of all types, conch, huge hermit crabs and colorful fish galore. It was the kids first time snorkeling. Cayos Cochinos, Honduras
Patty and kayak 'crew' who happily jumped on board. They know a free ride when they see one. Cayos Cochinos, Honduras
"Puppy" was on the kayak because Mom and Katie were kayaking near the shore from cove to cove when "Puppy" saw us, jumped in and kept swimming out into deeper and deeper waterá we thought she would drown so we rescued her! Cayos Cochinos, Honduras
One of the many beautiful sunsets to end each day. Cayos Cochinos, Honduras
